Updated 9-Dec-2011. I graduated from Stephens College in 1975 with my BFA in Theatre, went immediately to grad school at the Univ. of Mo-Kansas City where I received my MA in '77 in Costume Design and Technology. After that I taught at the Univ. of WIsconsin-Stevens Point, Univ. of Missouri-Columbia, Auburn University- all one year gigs before I landed a home at Colorado State University. While there for 4 years I met my husband, Ron Adams, who strangely was from just south of Syracuse. We moved back to Kansas City in 84 and I received my MFA from my old alma mater-UMKC in Aug of '85 after 12 months of what I fondly refer to as slave labor. I joined the faculty of Sam Houston State University in August of '85 and have been here ever since (earning the rank of full professor in 2002) as the resident costume and make up designer as well as the costumer for the first 18 1/2 years. I have designed costumes professionally in Missouri, Alabama, Colorado, Texas, and Florida. Professionally I think of myself some days as an educator and other days as a costume designer. For a change of pace for the last three summers I have worked for a friend who owns Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas teaching makeup, masks and flat patterning. Working as a theatre artist reminds me daily of how small the world is. Everyone literally knows someone you know. I remember Richard Gardner asking me after I graduated from high school what I was going to do with a degree in theatre. My response was I didn't know, get a job and work. I guess that is what I have done. The only jobs I have ever had have been as a costumer (draper/ stitcher/accessories/wardrobe)or as a costume designer. I have never been unemployed, thank God, and have learned to look at the world through some rather strange angles. Some would call my views a bit warped, and a little crazy, but it keeps me going and always creating. My family consist of my husband, Ron, daughter Cassandra who is 21 and lives in Frisco, TX. My son Jeremiah, 17, is a Senior in high school. We also have 4 cats and a dog.

Updated 21-Nov-2011. Life after Haverling started with Cornell University to study Horticulture. After college, I worked at some interesting places managing greenhouses, garden centers, wholesale nurseries. While living in Buffalo, I met John Gurecki through the Adirondack Mountain Club. After 5 years of hiking, camping, fishing, making chocolate truffles together and living in our own apartments, we decided to get married in 1996. (I had to make sure he was the right guy.) We each got jobs in the Bath area in '97,and our daughter Madeleine was born in 1998. We fill our time here with home-schooling, YMCA, Cedar Arts Center, Keuka Lake Players, gardening, Finger Lakes Trail and other assorted fun.
